Something tells me that if you don’t have a growth mindset, you’re not going to get this article at all. You won’t be interested in learning, you will think you know all you need to know and heck – you’re probably not someone who subscribes to professional and personal development opportunities because you already know everything you need to know.

Resilience - learning from mistakes and past experiences

So if you’re one of those people, you can stop reading now. 😉

For the rest of you who are still here, what exactly is this growth mindset topic all about? It’s a mindset that believes in the power of effort, resilience, and learning from experiences. In simple terms, it’s the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be developed over time through dedication and hard work – and that we’re not simply born smart; partially what makes us smart is being open-minded to all there is in the world to learn.

Ways to adopt a growth mindset

A few years ago, I heard Liz Wiseman speak about “Rookie Smarts.” In her book: Rookie Smarts: Why Learning Beats Knowing in the New Game of Work, Wiseman writes “In a rapidly changing world, experience can be a curse. Careers stall, innovation stops, and strategies grow stale. Being new, naive, and even clueless can be an asset. For today’s knowledge workers, constant learning is more valuable than mastery.

Think about it – how often have we found ourselves stuck in the fixed mindset trap? You know, that mindset that says our talents and intelligence are something we’re born with, and there’s not much we can do to change them. It’s the voice that whispers, “You either have it or you don’t.” But guess what? That voice is so last decade – and in today’s coaching world, we call that voice a “saboteur” – or the negative voice that gets in the way of you growing and actually achieving what you really want.

Enter the growth mindset – the game-changer that encourages us to view challenges as opportunities, mistakes as lessons, and setbacks as stepping stones. It’s like upgrading your mental software to the latest version, complete with bug fixes and performance enhancements.

Identifying and rewiring limiting beliefs to embrace a growth mindset

One of the coolest aspects of the growth mindset is its impact on resilience. When faced with obstacles, a growth mindset helps us bounce back stronger than ever. Instead of throwing in the towel at the first sign of difficulty, we see challenges as a chance to learn and improve. It’s like having a secret superpower that turns setbacks into setups for future success.

From rookie to guru

In her book, Wiseman reveals some paths from rookie to guru (my words, not hers):

  1. The Backpacker – rookies are more open to new possibilities. Think: first day on the job. Think “you’re new around here, what do you think of what we’ve done? We value your fresh perspective.”
  2. The Hunter-Gatherer – rookies seek out experts and return with new ways of solving their problem and building on what they were working on
  3. The Firewalker – with little confidence to go on, the firewalker treads lightly and seeks feedback to stay on track
  4. The Pioneer – these rookies keep things simple and meeting core needs while improvising to make sure those core needs are met

That backpacker mentality helped me a lot in my early corporate days. Walking into a big company with my fresh degree in my pocket (or half degree, on work-terms) and being asked to read something with fresh eyes. What did I know? (I can tell you, one company had to send back tens of thousands of dollars of newly published materials because they had missed a glaring typo on the cover – oops!) That fresh perspective saved them reputational damage!

Changing your mindset to growth mode

Transformative practices to enhance your mindset for business success

But let’s keep it real – adopting a growth mindset doesn’t happen overnight, unless you really are green and open to learning. It’s a process, a journey, and a commitment to continuous improvement. So, how can we cultivate this mindset in our day-to-day lives?

  • Embrace Challenges: Instead of shying away from difficulties, lean into them. Challenges are the perfect playground for growth.
  • Learn from Criticism: Constructive criticism is your best friend. It’s not a personal attack; it’s a golden opportunity to refine your skills.
  • Celebrate Effort, Not Just Results: Acknowledge the hard work you put in, regardless of the outcome. Remember, it’s not always about the destination but the journey.
  • Cultivate Curiosity: Approach life with the curiosity of a child. Ask questions, seek answers, and stay hungry for knowledge.
  • Keep the Big Picture in Mind: Understand that setbacks are just temporary roadblocks on the highway of progress. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Overcoming mindset blocks to business (entrepreneurial) visibility

One of the biggest things I see in my clients, with regards to stepping into the unknown territory of attracting their new clients through upping their visibility game, is the reticence to step into the world of social media – on video, online; showing “off” their expertise.

MOST people fear being seen. It’s true. You may not believe me – because you see so many people online, but please know that there are far more people NOT online, being invisible, and hiding their expertise than not.

Unbelievable, isn’t it?

It’s a mindset block. Which is why I believe mindset and marketing go hand-in-hand.

Elevate Your Impact(Shameless plug –see? Here I am being visible – to help you.)  Elevate your Impact with Mindset and Marketing is a 12 month program that I have developed for the new and growing entrepreneur who needs to get their message out to the world – this entrepreneur is usually hiding behind their expertise hoping and praying that they will just be found – perhaps by accident (and I’ve been found guilty of believing new clients found me by accident.) But in fact, I had to be purposeful. I had to speak, share, and communicate what I was doing so I could actually help people – just like you – share your expertise with the world, in complete alignment with your truth and help the people you really want to help.

Creating opportunities through visibility with a growth mindset approach

So this is where the tough love comes in. I believe so much in helping women live a life on their own terms by monetizing their gifts so they can live a life that’s authentic to them– while making the difference in the world they know they are here to make.

That means – whether you’re in career or business – that you have to advocate for yourself, speak your truth and be – FULLY – the person you are and LET OTHERS KNOW. You can’t make an impact without speaking your truth, and showing up – fully. No matter how much you might prefer to hide and just have people “accidentally” find you, you have to show up.

What you can do now to adopt a growth mindset

Adopting a growth mindset isn’t always easy. But if you can put aside the saboteur in your head that says “I should know this stuff!” “They’re going to find out I have no clue what I’m doing!” and “Why should I open my mouth? They’ll only find out the truth!” You’ll find that having a growth mindset just means being open to new information. And people will love you for it. (Because they don’t know it all either.) You’ll be stepping into a mindset that is characterized by authenticity, an unwavering commitment to learning, bouncing back from setbacks, and that holds the potential to propel your businesses to new heights – while showing up as fully, authentically you.
