The Year of the Fire Horse: Courage, Clarity, and Forward Motion

I’ve never paid much attention to the Chinese zodiac — until this year.

Not because I suddenly know more about it, but because I keep hearing about it. In conversations, in writing, in passing comments. To the point where I even think I know the date: February 17, the Chinese New Year.

And apparently, this year is about growth, change, and new beginnings.

Which makes sense — because those themes are everywhere in my life right now too.

This year marks the Year of the Fire Horse. I won’t pretend to be an expert in Chinese astrology, but as a leadership and business coach, I’ve learned to pay attention to patterns — the moments when things feel like they’re shifting beneath our feet.

This year carries that feeling.

The Fire Horse is often associated with independence, courage, movement, and forward momentum. It’s bold. It doesn’t linger in indecision. It doesn’t wait for permission.

And that question alone is worth pausing on.

How often do we wait for permission?

The women I’m working with this year certainly aren’t. They’re decisive, thoughtful, and ready to claim what comes next. They may have different names, different stories, different paths — but what they’re really claiming is the year of me.

And if I’m honest, that feels both exhilarating… and a little daunting.

What are you ready to claim? This year, I’m claiming a grounded, connected pace — one that’s open to possibility without being rushed.

A dear friend recently described it as the pace of the forest guide. Steady. Attentive. Listening with every step.

The last few years have required a lot of letting go. I’ve said goodbye to:

• My dad
• My husband’s dad
• My daughters’ childhoods
• The home where we raised our family
• A neighbourhood of 19 years, filled with friendships and memories
• A way of living that no longer needs me in the same way

There was real grief in that.

2024 and 2025 were years of grieving and reclaiming — and while parts of that looked fun on Instagram, much of it was hard. Really hard.

So when I think about the Year of the Fire Horse — a year associated with forward motion and reclaiming — I feel something different than urgency.

I feel ready.

In 2026, our family moves into a new home — one designed for the life we’re living now. A place to welcome our daughters, future partners, and maybe grandchildren someday. A pace that isn’t dictated by school schedules. A rhythm that feels more like our own.

Every transition takes getting used to. Becoming a couple. Becoming parents. Living for others who depend on you. Those years were expansive — full in one way.

Now life gets to be full in a different way.

When we talk about independence, it’s easy to imagine doing everything alone. That’s not the version I’m interested in.

This year invites a more grounded kind of independence — one rooted in self-leadership:

• Making decisions without over-explaining
• Trusting your inner compass
• Choosing what aligns, even when it disappoints others
• Accepting support without handing over your authority

True independence isn’t isolation.
It’s clarity.

And clarity changes how you move.

One of the biggest misconceptions about momentum is that it has to be fast or exhausting.

The Fire Horse doesn’t ask us to hustle harder — it asks us to move with purpose.

Purposeful movement is deliberate. Sustainable. Fueled by conviction rather than pressure. You’re not forcing progress; you’re responding to what matters.

For many women, that looks like:

• Simplifying instead of adding
• Saying no more often
• Choosing fewer, deeper relationships
• Letting go of timelines that were never yours

This is forward motion that doesn’t cost you yourself.

Do you have the courage to be seen? The Fire Horse is not interested in shrinking.

This is a year that invites visibility — speaking up, taking up space, allowing your voice to be heard where you might once have stayed quiet.

Not louder. Clearer.

Visibility isn’t about performance. It’s about presence. Being known for what you actually think, believe, and want — rather than editing yourself to fit.

I see it again and again with women in leadership and business: the moment they stop shrinking to belong, everything shifts.

This is your invitation for the year ahead. If this is the Year of the Fire Horse, perhaps the invitation isn’t to become someone new — but to move as who you already are.

To stop waiting.
To stop second-guessing.
To stop carrying what was never meant to be yours.

And instead, to claim the version of you that’s been there all along.

You don’t need to see every step.
You just need to trust the direction — and take the next one.
